Cowboy Gabe and a prayer request

Gabe wants to be a cowboy when he grows up.  Today, he got to be a little ‘grown up’!   Gabe turned 7 yesterday and to celebrate he got to go ride horses and got to play cowboy with me for a little bit.

Gabe was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the end of October 2006, on the same day that I photographed Mackenzie from a previous post.  As soon as mom told me the date, I shivered.

Although Gabe looks perfect,  it was very real to me that he has been fighting a war.  He wanted me to photograph his muscles, and you can’t do that with a shirt on.  I’ll keep those pictures for his mommy but let tell you about it.  Scars, tubes etc decorated his sweet little body but that wasn’t the thing that most caught the eye of my lens.  He had tatoos!!!  OK, not the ‘normal’ kind but that of a sister’s love all over his body.  Faith wants to be an artist, I can see that.  The best tatoo was the HUGE heart on his tummy and side that said ‘mommy’.

He brought his two sisters along.  Lexie - 14 and will be a freshman.

Faith ~ the artist

Gabe was exhausted by the end of our ’shoot out’ (my camera - his ‘guns’!).  He fell asleep in his mommy’s arms.  I asked if she sang to him.  Did she ever!  Wowsers!   As Dawn’s voice sang the most beautiful song, I shot through four streams of tears rollng down my cheeks.

When I talked to Gabe’s mommy about our ’shoot’, she told me how much she studies his face so she can remember every bit of it.  Dawn, I hope this will help.

Gabe and his family would love your prayers.

Still Photography ~ Moving Images

I love my tagline, absolutely love it!    I hope it is true, I try to make it true.  Moving images.  That is what it is about to me.  I say alot ‘it’s not about how you look it is about how you feel’.   In this old favorite, I hope you can tell how these three feel, at least for this moment.

The two boys in this picture and my Cole had what Cole said was ‘the best day of his whole life’.  They were golf caddies for Rusty Wallace (the former race car driver), his pilot and a local investor in the Newton track.  Cole was crazy with excitement and even came up into my studio while I was photographing a very pretty senior to tell us all about it.    He had stories to tell, an autographed hat and money in his pocket.  He couldn’t have been happier.

William & Israel

Meet two of my favorite people ( I know, I have a lot!) William and Israel.  What makes them special you might ask?  A few things.  I love both of their mommies.   William’s mommy Alex is about as sweet at they come and makes me feel like the best photographer in the world, every single day.  There is not a time she leaves my house without a big hug and the most sincere thank you.   I love her!   Israel’s mommy Rachel is fun and spunky and makes both my nails and Alex’s nails look like a million bucks.  Rachel was one of my very first clients and I still hear many people talking about a picture I took of her hottie boys 5 years ago.

But the most special thing is that William and Israel were born within 12 hours of each other to these two very special people in my life.  I have photographed both of them, a lot.  Really.  I miss them if a month goes by and I haven’t seen them.    My goal since they were born was to make each of them their own gallery on my web site so that you can really watch these two babies grow from days to weeks to years.  So, now that I’ve blogged about it, I must go and gather pictures, remember I said I’ve photographed them a lot.  It will take time, but I’m going to start.

Here is a start!

Adorable Isadora

Sometimes life just isn’t fair.  Why do you ask?  Because I will never have eyelashes 1/10th as beautiful as Isadora’s eyelashes!  They are over the top beautiful.  When she has her eyes closed, wowsers, they go on forever!

I photographed Isadora the first time when she was 3 days old.  Here she is 1 year and 1 day old.  She did a great job enduring all our outfit changes.  Maybe modeling is in her future!

Prayers to all the flood victims…..

My parents grew up in Cedar Rapids.  My fondest memories are spending time with my grandparents.    They lived 6 blocks from the river in Cedar Rapids in a beautiful old part of town.  The sights, sounds and smells (if you know Cedar Rapids : )   )  are all very clear for me.

My mom graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic school, my parents were married there, my sisters and I were baptized there.  As a child, I loved Christmas eve there best.  We would run across the busiest Cedar Rapids street in the frigid cold and escape into the warm church, the insense burning and the kneelers squeaking as you lowered them to pray.  After mass, we would head back out into the cold, racing across the street still praying, but this time, in hopes that  Grandpa would have the radio on listening to Santa’s location.  We needed to get in bed quickly so he couldn’t forget us.

The center of so many memories……
